Meet Cooper J., 19

When Cooper was diagnosed with autism at 18 months in 2008, he was nonspeaking and faced significant sensory challenges. His mother, Amy, was given a discouraging forecast about what his future might hold.

But Cooper was bound for a completely different trajectory. Today, at 19, he is shattering those limitations across Anchorage and Whittier, Alaska, not just participating in his community, but actively protecting it as a trained firefighter and Emergency Medical Technician (EMT).

Cooper’s path required years of dedicated speech, physical and occupational therapies. He spoke his first words in first grade, but his growth never stopped. Reflecting on those challenging early years, his mom shares, "we had major hurdles. It took a very long time, but I feel his story could encourage other parents to know they are not alone."

The sensory overload that once required constant headphones is now managed with resilience. Today, Cooper wears hearing protection for the roar of the firetruck engine, turning an old challenge into a tool for his trade. Though he still paces and flaps to process excitement, Cooper has mastered navigating public spaces and finding safe environments to recharge his social and emotional batteries.

Backed by a supportive fire chief in Jason Cates, who gave him the extra time he needed to learn the trade, Cooper has found a true brotherhood who accepts him and encourages him every step of the way.
