Last week, we learned that Hertz plans to sell about 20,000 electric vehicles, including Teslas, from its U.S. fleet. It's a remarkable U-turn from the company's previous goal to convert 25% of its fleet to electric by the end of 2024.
Hertz says it will instead buy more gas-powered vehicles, citing higher expenses related to collision and damage for EVs. We suspect that's only a partial truth. It's more likely that Hertz overestimated the demand for EVs by renters, while underestimating the negative feedback from renters who reserve a gas-powered car only to be told at the rental counter that an EV is "all that is available."
Remember, when you ask AutoSlash for a quote and choose a car category, we show you both gas and electric car models that are available at your desired pickup location. That way, you can make a more informed choice. And if you specifically DON'T want to rent an EV, we let you choose your fuel preference as well. On car choice, AutoSlash believes you should be in the driver's seat.
