One reason mythology still holds power — to myself, and all of us at Awe — is that it so often feels strangely modern. In ancient legends, we see relationships, struggles and scenes that seem like they could have come out of our own lives: a love between Achilles and Patroclus that moves us; a line of poetry by Sappho that cuts to the core of what it means to be human. These figures were mythic, but they’re also refreshingly real. The emotions they felt are as outsized as our own, their dramas as recognizable and relatable as if they were taking place in the next room.

These figures remind us that so many legends are based in fact. But more importantly, they remind us that the facts of our own lives are equally legendary.
