This is gonna be controversial, -.
Let your dog CHEW!
I know that might sound crazy.
Especially if you’ve come home to another chewed-up pair of shoes… or pillow stuffing scattered across your living room.
But in reality…
Chewing is hands-down one of the BEST things
your dog can do to feel calm, relaxed, and happy.
After all, it’s in their DNA.
Their wolf ancestors chewed, chomped, and munched for 3 very good reasons:
1. Chewing helps redirect your dog’s adrenaline / nervous energy.
When wolves go hunting, their brains get flooded with adrenaline to sharpen their senses.
And once that hunt is over?
Chewing on tough hides and bones gives the wolves a healthy way to get rid of extra adrenaline… and switch into “rest mode.”
What that means for your dog in 2026:
If your dog feels stressed or scared, chewing is a natural way for them to self-soothe. (It’s kind of like when a baby sucks their thumb.)
2. Chewing stimulates your dog’s healthy brain function.
When wolves get bored between hunts, there’s a chance they’ll play-fight with each other to stay busy.
But that roughhousing can actually put the whole pack at risk, if the fighting turns… less friendly.
That’s why wolves developed a love for chewing.
They actually get a surge of feel-good hormones every time they chomp down…
Which means they’re more likely to deal with their boredom by chewing on a stick or bone, rather than fighting a pack mate.
What that means for your dog in 2026:
When your dog gets bored, their chewing instinct tells them:
“Hey, bite down on that shoe over there… it’ll feel awesome.”
3. Chewing promotes your dog’s clean teeth and healthy gums.
Plain and simple — wolves can’t brush their teeth.
And over time, any bits of food stuck in their gums can lead to tooth decay and other serious health problems.
But gnawing on a bone helps physically scrub their pearly-whites…
Keeping their teeth clean, strong, and useful for hunting.
What that means for your dog in 2026:
Your dog may not know they’re scrubbing their teeth… but their chewing instincts are keeping their mouth clean and healthy.
“That all makes sense…
But I still can’t let my dog chew up my whole house.”
I hear ya!
It’s frustrating to come home from an errand only to find a slobbery, chewed-up TV remote on the floor.
Not to mention, if your dog chews on the wrong thing (or, heaven forbid, swallows the wrong thing)...
It could be disastrous for their health.
The problem is, when your dog ignores their chewing instinct…
It creates an “itch” in their brain.
And if they don’t scratch that itch, your pup can seek relief
by acting out in frustrating, destructive, or dangerous ways.
They might bark at nothing… anxiously pace the house… dig up your flower beds… hide your things…
Your dog isn’t TRYING to cause trouble…
They’re just desperate to find an outlet for their chewing instinct.
Now, one solution is to simply buy your dog a bone or a chew toy.
But unfortunately… that’s likely to backfire!
The problem with chew toys
When dogs chew, they’re expecting to make some kind of progress — part of the fun is seeing the thing get smaller over time.
So when a rubber chew toy doesn’t get smaller after days of chewing…
It doesn’t quiiiiite scratch their chewing itch.
That means your dog will likely get bored fast… abandon the toy… or totally destroy it to get the most fun out of it before moving on.
(And as you know — a torn-up toy is a major choking hazard.)
The problem with bones / hide chews
Even though they may be natural, bones can be dangerous and splinter in your dog’s throat.
Raw hide chews, on the other hand, are typically too soft for your dog to get the full chewing benefit.
And what’s worse… many of them aren’t digestible.
But your dog doesn’t know that.
So if your pup innocently swallows a bit of a hide chew — it can actually get stuck in their gut, absorb liquids, and swell up to block their intestines.
Which is obviously a HUUUUUUGE health hazard.
It can be overwhelming, trying to find something SAFE and HEALTHY for your dog to chew on…
Let alone something that will actually keep your pup’s attention.
If you ask me, a hard chew needs to check these crucial boxes to get my seal of approval.
My must-haves for the perfect hard chew
🔲 A craveable, chewable texture — hard enough to satisfy your dog’s chewing instincts, soft enough to avoid splintering
🔲 The durability “sweet spot” — it should last long enough for your pup to enjoy hours of chewing… but shrink at a good rate, so it feels like they’re making progress
🔲 ZERO grains, fillers, meat meals, artificial flavors, or added sugars — because consuming these even in small amounts can wreck your dog’s digestion, weight, and healthspan
And by now, I’m sure you’re curious if I’ve found anything that actually checks those boxes.
Well… sort of.
“Yak chews” come VERY close to being the perfect hard chew.
If you haven’t heard of them…
Yak chews are durable sticks of hard, dried cheese, normally pressed into a shape that makes your dog think:
“Oooh, I’ve GOTTA sink my teeth into THAT!”
Now, yak chews generally do check the boxes.
They’re tough to chew, and in the rare case they break, they’re basically just a yummy cheese stick, which is safe to swallow
They typically last for hours, which keeps your pup’s attention while they have fun seeing their chew shrink, bit by bit
The most basic formulas are just dried milk, making it easy to avoid junk filler ingredients
But there’s one more important checkbox many yak chews DON’T hit:
🔲 A perfect yak chew will go the extra mile to help your dog unwind and feel calm & happy.
See, there’s one BIG difference between wolves and your dog:
They don’t have to deal with a busy, modern-day environment.
You know — doorbells, TV sounds, or vacuum cleaners constantly riling them up.
Which means your dog may need a bit of extra help to let go of the anxious feelings which cause them to chew up your favorite shoes.
I’m talking about superfood ingredients with calming properties…
To gently help your dog de-stress while chewing, so they can keep calm even during stressful times.
And I’ll tell ya, -...
To this day, I’ve never seen a yak chew that checks that final box.
But you know I’m a problem solver… So I decided to make my own yak chew formula.
This way your pup can have a delicious, healthy chewing outlet any time they need to unwind.
