A few weeks ago, I went back to Bali for the first time in years.
The last time I was there, I was incubating and launching Baloo. I remember feeling lighter there. More present. Like my body could deeply exhale. I had hoped to plug back into that feeling again.
Instead, I found a different place. And I was different too. It was not surprising, but if I’m being honest, I was a bit disappointed.
I've spent a lot of time thinking about why certain places or moments stay with us. We tell ourselves that if we could only set up the right circumstances, we'd feel those desired feelings again. But the truth is, the magic is not sourced from outside of ourselves. Favorable conditions are supportive, it’s true, but the source of the magic is in finding a way to set down what we carry. To fully settle, so we can draw a deep breath, and deeply relax at our core.
When that happens, everything else changes. We’re more present with the people we’re with. More creative. We notice things we were moving too quickly to see.
That realization brought me back to why I started Baloo.
We spend so much time trying to quiet our minds, but so often it's our bodies that haven't gotten the message that it’s ok to let go, to soften. I love that a weighted blanket doesn't ask anything of you. There's nothing to master, nothing to do. You simply get into bed. The rest is something your body already knows.
I've been thinking about that ever since I got home. Maybe the feeling we're chasing isn't tied to a place after all. Maybe it's what becomes possible when your body can finally let go.
