Hi there —
Summer is (finally) here, and that means… fruity African naturals over ice!! Gimme Coffee's Burundi Turihamwe is exactly what your mug (or your Stanley tumbler) has been waiting for. Light, syrupy, and crushable over ice, this gorgeous cup is all peach tea, wild strawberry, and medjool date depth, with a sweetness so rich it tastes like someone stirred brown sugar syrup right in.
Tastes Like: Peach Tea, Medjool Date, Strawberry Hard Candy
Why I'm Obsessed: When the weather gets hot, I always reach for a fruity African natural to brew over ice. Gimme sent me a bunch of samples recently, and this was one that caught my eye during the recent little heat wave. Peaches and strawberries? Um, yes. I knew it would be sweet, but not this special: it’s got silky, syrupy peach tea up front, a little wild strawberry candy brightness, and a deep, cola-like sweetness that lingers in the best way. The medjool date note adds a gorgeous roundness that keeps it from being just fruity, giving it real body and depth even over ice. There's a whisper of florals in there too, like drinking a fancy iced tea on the patio with your flower garden all abloom in the background.
Ithaca-based Gimme Coffee is a worker-owned coffee cooperative, and they take their sourcing very seriously – you just know this coffee has a good story behind it. Turihamwe means "together" in Kirundi, and it's the name of Burundi's first washing station built and owned exclusively by women farmers and growing with support from the International Women's Coffee Alliance (Personal note: I've long been a fan of the IWCA and the work they do for women across the coffee industry!). This coffee is also part of Importer JNP's Dushime Premium Program, which delivers a bonus payment to producers at the end of each harvest season. Dushime means "let's be thankful" and, honestly, when I drink coffee like this one, I can’t help but be thankful. We are so lucky to have access to amazing coffees like these, and once you learn how many hands it takes to produce and transport and roast them, it feels even more so.
Bottom Line: You'll love this coffee if you love sweetened iced tea, African naturals, or cold coffee that’ll make you want to get outside in the sunshine STAT.
