Happy Summer Friday everyone! Unfortunately for those of us on the East Coast, all outdoor weekend activities are on hold due to smoke blowing in from Canadian forest fires. Barbecues and pool parties are getting rescheduled because the air quality index is not looking good, and wearing an N95 mask in someone’s backyard is giving me COVID PTSD.

But if your weekend plans just got cancelled, there’s one place you can always go for some indoor AC: the movie theater. Bring a sweatshirt, buy some popcorn and Sour Patch Kids, and settle in for 2+ hours of nice, clean, butter-scented air. Plus, the movie theater lineup is STRONG atm. The Odyssey is out in theaters (more on that in a bit), and Olivia Wilde’s The Invite is a deliciously fizzy romp about two couples discussing an open relationship. If you’ve got kids, there’s Minions & Monsters and Toy Story 5, or if you definitely aren’t bringing kids, there’s Jackass: Best and Last or Evil Dead Burn (both of which would scar a 12-year-old for life). Oh, and you could also still see Obsession if you’re one of the three people in America who hasn’t seen it yet.

If you’d like to go the TV route and stay in the comfort of your own home, there’s also plenty to watch: The Real Housewives of Orange County, Next Gen: NYC, Love at First Sight, and Big Brother all recently started new seasons if you love reality TV. There’s a Little House on the Prairie reboot on Netflix, The Five Star Weekend on Peacock, and Lucky over on Apple TV+. If you want to stick with the smoke & fire theme, you could also catch up on House of the Dragon.

But the world burning hasn’t stopped celebrities from their usual shenanigans, so let’s dive into the latest pop culture news:

Update On My Close Personal Friends — Chloe Fineman is out at SNL

Every summer a series of SNL cast announcements trickle out of 30 Rock, with longtime cast members calling it quits, underperforming comedians getting the chop from Lorne Michaels, and newbies added to the roster. While Bowen Yang left midway through Season 51, the first major change to the Season 52 cast will be Chloe Fineman's exit after seven seasons. SNL’s go-to impressionist announced her departure on Instagram, saying, “ It’s really hard to leave SNL but it does feel like the right time.” According to Deadline, Chloe is already in talks to star in an upcoming Netflix series with KJ Apa, so she’ll be back on our screens soon enough.

As the longest-running female cast member, Fineman will leave a sizable hole for the show to fill. In Season 51, she and Sarah Sherman were the only two women on the main cast, with Ashley Padilla, Veronika Slowikowska, and Jane Wickline serving as featured players. With Chloe leaving, Lorne is going to need to hire some ladies, especially with the madness of 2028 presidential campaign announcements coming this winter. The Couch Report — The Odyssey is FINALLY here

After a press cycle that’s seemingly gone on for months (and made more stops than Odysseus himself), The Odyssey has finally arrived in theaters. While I certainly wouldn’t want to spoil the movie for those of you who Sparknotesed it back in high school and have since forgotten the plot, I will say that it is a FEAST for the eyes. Christopher Nolan really dragged his cast of beautiful famous people, including Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, Tom Holland, Zendaya, Charlize Theron, Robert Pattinson, and Lupita Nyong’o, to some stunning far-flung locations. The movie filmed in Morocco, Greece, Italy, Iceland, Scotland, and the U.S., and boy, oh, boy can you tell this isn’t green screen slop. Great beaches, beautiful beaches.

The Odyssey is gearing up to be THE movie of the summer, with projections estimating it to earn near $1 billion and Gold Derby already predicting a slew of Oscar nominations. The IMAX screenings at 2 a.m. are selling out, there’s a popcorn bucket shaped like a Trojan horse, and fans who saw it yesterday are already buying tickets for second, third, and fourth viewings. If you consider yourself a pop culture aficionado in the slightest, you’ve got to go see The Odyssey.

Be So For Real — The Special Forces Season 5 cast is diabolical

When casting a reality TV show, you’re always looking for a bit of chaos, but the newly announced cast of Special Forces: World’s Toughest Test (a show I have admittedly never watched but am, just now, learning from Wikipedia has been won by Nick Viall, Brody Jenner, and Gia Giudice) was seemingly crafted by the devil himself. To start, there’s disgraced former Congressperson/convicted felon pardoned by Donald Trump/serial liar George Santos and former The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills star Brandi Glanville, who allegedly got an entire filmed season of The Real Housewives Ultimate Girls Trip scrapped from ever airing and is recovering from a facial parasite. Then there’s Full House actress Candace Cameron Bure, Kyle Richards’ ex-husband Mauricio Umansky, and the estranged son of Kate Gosselin, Collin Gosselin, who has a tell-all memoir coming out this fall. Also on the chaotic cast is Pamela Anderson’s ex-boyfriend David Charvet, who seemingly hasn’t worked in entertainment at all since 2017, Vine star Hannah Stocking, and Selling Sunset’s model/real estate agent Breana Tiesi. Of course, as a Scream Queens fan, I will be rooting for Kate Hudson’s brother and actor Oliver Hudson (or I would if I intended to watch this show).

Current Hyperfixation — Will Ferrell’s late-night meltdown

I will always love Will Ferrell, and I will always love a stupid late-night bit, and I will especially always love Will Ferrell doing a stupid late-night bit. While promoting his new show Hawk, Ferrell stopped by The Tonight Show on his birthday, where Jimmy Fallon played a prank on him that involved candles that won’t blow out. Ferrell responded with an epic meltdown that had me (and the studio audience) cackling. Please enjoy and take this level of dramatics into your weekend.
