Sasha and Malia Obama Are Too Cool To Be This Low-KeyWearing a blazer with no undershirt to your dad’s work event is the ultimate power move.
Happy Monday, Betches! Here’s to hoping you had a restful three-day weekend and are returning to a work email inbox that’s pleasantly devoid of dumpster fires. While some of us were celebrating Juneteenth/Father’s Day, others were celebrating the arrival of Casa Amor on Love Island USA (and the messy shenanigans that are about to ensue). After two weeks of wearing bathing suits, making out, and “girth checking” in the main Love Island villa, our happy new couples are about to be split up. Sunday’s episode introduced this season’s Casa Amor twist, in which all of the male islanders will be shipped to a separate villa where six new women wait to tempt them out of their fledgling relationships. Feelings are about to get hurt, so stay tuned. In other news, Love Is Blind’s Giannina Gibelli used the holiday weekend to marry The Bachelorette’s Blake Horstmann in a reality TV-fueled wedding in Croatia, Hailee Steinfeld and her star quarterback husband Josh Allen used the holiday weekend to announce the name of their baby daughter, Harper Haize Allen, and Anne Hathaway used the holiday weekend to show off her new baby bump. But let’s dive into everything that happened while you were busy listening to your dad talk about the World Cup at brunch. Updates On My Close Personal Friends — Anne Hathaway is about to make maternity red carpet fashion looks chic as hellThis is the year of Anne Hathaway. The Oscar winner has already helmed two fashion offensives on the press tours for Mother Mary and The Devil Wears Prada 2, and she’s got at least three more films, The Odyssey, The End of Oak Street, and Verity coming in the next four months. On Friday, however, Hathaway announced her biggest project of the year: a new baby! In a viral Instagram post, Hathaway debuted her little bump with a video captioned, “x Baby, I’m yours x”. Somewhere in New York, Hathaway’s stylists must be frantically dialing up designers to source maternity wear, as the star, known for her fashion, will be attending red carpets with her budding plus one. Hathaway already has two sons, born in 2016 and 2019, with her husband Adam Shulman. Not since Rihanna at the Super Bowl has a fashionista been visibly pregnant at the height of her career, so I for one will be refreshing the Getty website, waiting to see Mother Anne serving on The Odyssey’s red carpet. Law Roach and Zendaya are about to get upstaged. The Couch Report — Laugh/ugly cry your way through Voicemails for IsabelleStraight-to-streaming rom-coms can be a bit hit-or-miss, and it’s virtually impossible to suss out Hallmark Channel vibes vs. big screen vibes from a Netflix thumbnail. I’m here to inform you that Voicemails from Isabelle is the real deal. Zoey Deutch plays Jill, a San Francisco baker whose younger sister recently passed away after a long battle with cystic fibrosis. Adrift and alone, Jill often calls her sister’s old cell phone, leaving humorous diary-entry-like voicemails recapping her dating life and career woes. When that cell number is assigned to Wes (Nick Robinson), he begins to fall in love with Jill via audio recording, eventually traveling to SF to stage a meet cute. You will laugh, you will sob, you will desperately want a breakfast burrito by the time the credits roll. It’s You’ve Got Mail for modern times. Be So For Real — Toy Story 5 Needed More HammThe fifth Toy Story installment arrived in theaters this weekend to a massive box office haul and generally favorable reviews. I, however, would like to lodge a formal complaint, because where was the cantankerous piggy bank Hamm? The beloved pink icon, voiced by Pixar stalwart John Ratzenberger, had maybe three lines in all Toy Story 5. Also shoved to the wayside were Slinky Dog, Rex, Mr. and Mrs. Potato Head, Bo Peep, and the green little aliens. I love a new character as much as the next guy, but if I’m paying to watch a Toy Story movie, I expect to see my old faves. Toy Story 5 has a cast bigger than Love Island with hot new bombshell toys, like an iPad, a GPS hippo, and a potty training gizmo, strolling into Casa Bonnie’s Room to steal airtime. Call me old-fashioned, but I would like a movie that pays a little more attention to my beloved Hamm. He’s been a part of my life since 1995, and I need to know how he’s doing. Is Bonnie saving money inside him? How’s he doing without Woody around? Does he have feelings about AI? I NEED TO KNOW! Current Hyperfixation — Malia and Sasha Obama at their dad’s presidential library openingIn today’s era of nepobabies where George W. Bush’s daughter is hosting The Today Show, Kamala Harris’s step-daughter is a knitting influencer, and Donald Trump’s son is a podcaster, there’s something very chic about just how mysterious Malia and Sasha Obama are. Barack and Michelle Obama’s pair of daughters made an appearance at their father’s presidential library on Thursday, but prior to that, Sasha hadn’t appeared in a Getty photo since she was photographed at an Indonesian temple on vacation in 2017. While Malia has been slightly more visible, working with Donald Glover on several film projects, neither girl has social media in an era where they could hit 1M followers in under a week. Unplugged, unbothered, and outmugging everyone in the presidential box? I know that’s right. May Sasha and Malia inspire us all to be a bit more offline and aloof. May we all rock a blazer with no undershirt to a family gathering only to disappear for another five years. Somewhere, Jools Lebron is applauding the most demure and mindful girls around. |
