And just like that, Katseye is down yet another member. A few weeks back, I wrote about how the international girl group is basically becoming that photo from the end of an America’s Next Top Model episode. Both Sophia Laforteza and Manon Bannerman are on indefinite hiatuses, and now Megan Skiendiel is also on a break after a sprained ankle. With only three members left standing, the group pulled out of Olivia Rodrigo’s Daisy Chain Fields festival. Being a member of Katseye is starting to feel like being hired as the Hogwarts Defense Against the Dark Arts professor. But ankles aside, this has been a big week in pop culture news. Billie Eilish officiated her brother Finneas’s wedding, Travis Kelce appeared in a Tommy Hilfiger ad, and Ariana Grande’s tour finally came to an end. After Ariana pulled out of the West End version of Sunday in the Park with George to “take a step back from visibility,” her Wicked co-star Jonathan Bailey also announced his departure this week. In perhaps the most surprising news of the week, however, nearly all of the Love Island USA Season 8 couples are still together, or at least claimed to be on the show’s reunion. The couples still going strong include Trinity and Bryce, Melanie and Sincere, Aniya and Carl, Kayda and Zach, Titi and KC, and Kenzie and Dylan. The only breakups so far were Jaiden/Caleb and Parmida/Corbin. Especially given that the series wrapped up at the beginning of July, it’s wild that six pairs have lasted two months in the real world. Call me a pessimist, but I’m bracing for a slew of breakup announcements once the first set of influencer checks clear. I don’t know if this is a hot take, but I feel immediately bad for everyone who is not Jenna Dewan, Amber Glenn, and Harry Shum Jr. on this cast. Those are three people who have built careers out of dance/dance-adjacent fields, which doesn’t quite seem fair. Everyone else is just competing for that Dylan Efron finale slot for audience favorite who somewhat improves. The show premieres on September 15, so get your texting fingers ready to go.
The Couch Report — Finding Emily Since I just spent a whole newsletter talking about everything to watch coming out in September, I figured I’d throw it back slightly to shout out an August release that’s still playing in theaters. Finding Emily is a delightful British rom-com starring Spider-Man: Homecoming’s Angourie Rice Tell Me Everything’s Spike Fearn. On a drunk night out, Owen (Fearn) has a whirlwind encounter with a girl named Emily, who has to leave the bar in a rush before he can get her contact information. Completely smitten, Owen then sends a mass email to everyone in the university directory, including Emily Raine (Rice), who decides to help him find the correct Emily as part of her psychology thesis on love. As is often the case with rom-coms, however, in the process of finding the first Emily, Owen ends up falling for the second. The Met Gala needs a new theme if anyone has any ideas. The 2027 “Super Bowl of fashion” and its accompanying exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum of Art were initially announced as honoring John Galliano, the former creative director of both Givenchy and Dior. However, after intense backlash regarding anti-semitic and anti-Asian remarks resurfaced, Galliano announced on Instagram that he is withdrawing from the event. That leaves the 2027 Met Gala, set to take place on May 3, without a dress code or an exhibit to honor. While there is still plenty of time to pivot, an event of this scope traditionally takes over a year to plan, so Anna Wintour and co. will need to announce a new theme ASAP. I’d like to suggest “Double Ds: A Celebration of Style Icons Diane Keaton and Dolly Parton.” Tell me that wouldn’t be fun! Current Hyperfixation — The Anne Hathaway-aissance is headed to a racetrack near youThere’s no rest for the weary…or the pregnant in the case of Anne Hathaway. After her five-movie/one-baby year in 2026, she’s already announcing new projects including a requel of Tom Cruise’s 1990 NASCAR drama Days of Thunder. In a slightly awkward Instagram post, Hathaway said she’s going to give birth and then start shooting this film, which is set to premiere June 2, 2028. She’ll be playing the racecar team owner, but we don’t know much about the plot aside from that. While Anne does have a Ron Howard-directed war drama waiting in the wings without a release date, this is her first big project announcement following the success of The Odyssey and The Devil Wears Prada 2, so it will be interesting to see what else she’s got up her sleeve.
