While the marquee races for senate and governor understandably get the lion’s share of attention and dollars, there are hundreds of other elections in Texas that are critically important.
Called “down ballot” races, these contests for congress, state legislature and county government will decide the balance of power in Texas and in America.
Let me quickly explain.
While James Talarico will raise the money and press attention befitting a top-tier candidate for senate, he will not by himself be able to beat Ken Paxton. It’s not because of any shortcoming on his part — I don’t know that Texas Democrats have produced as talented a candidate in decades — instead, it’s because James is up against the combined spending of the entire Republican-billionaire complex and 30+ years of entrenched GOP power in Texas.
To overcome that he needs leaders on the frontlines who can meet and turn out voters where they are in every one of the 254 counties of Texas. That’s why Powered by People worked so hard to recruit a Democrat to run in every Congressional and state legislative race, something that hasn’t happened in 50 years! That's 150 state house candidates, 16 state senate candidates and 38 congressional candidates. We’re also supporting candidates for county commissioner and county judge, elevating those who will bring in new and lapsed voters for their local races and for the top-of-the-ticket showdown as well.
I know from experience how powerful this can be. When I ran for Senate in 2018, we had amazing first time front line candidates — like James Talarico in his first bid for State Rep — who not only won their races but brought in the local voters who helped me get within 2.6% of beating Ted Cruz. Working together we won 12 seats in the state house, 2 in Congress and 19 judicial positions in Harris County alone.
