Yesterday was a hot day at UTA as we officially kicked off our Every Campus Counts Tour!
But students, PXP volunteers and organizers were up for it. Lots of great conversations as we met, registered and made plans to stay in touch with every young voter we came across.
A few stories that stood out to me include: Corey, majoring in biology and history on his way to becoming a teacher in Texas public schools. He told me that he and his wife (a surgical tech in a local hospital) want to have kids, but not sure that they can do it in Texas. Explained to me that they are lifelong Christians, members of their church, but think the abortion ban could put them in harm’s way as they attempt to start a family.
Giovanni is in the aerospace engineering grad program, wants to go to NASA next. Benefitted from a program at UTA that helps young Texans who otherwise wouldn’t have a chance.
Met a young man whose parents immigrated from Liberia, now getting registered and voting to make sure that he’s a voice for his parents.
Latricia told me that she makes sure to vote in every election because of what happened in the school board elections in Mansfield — every vote counts! she says.
Marc became a citizen on Friday and we registered him to vote yesterday!
Tina told me she’s studying public health so that “those who are underrepresented can be represented the ways that corporations and big insurance companies are.”
Keno stopped by to check his registration and said he gives back by putting on punk rock shows to raise awareness and money for those impacted by ICE raids.
Was there when Alexander and Spruha got registered, big smiles.
Ethan told me, “I’m not really a Democrat or Republican. If anything, I identify with Teddy Roosevelt’s Bull Moose Party.” He explained that he grew up in rural Texas, his family running cattle. Land is important, conservation is important, fighting the concentration of power is important.
Elizabeth knocked it out of the park first time volunteering and so did the experienced Russ, on fire on a hot day. Props to Emmanuel and student PXP chapter.
