Arizona's Bigfoot predates the word "Bigfoot" by half a century.

                  The Rim is a two-hundred-mile escarpment cutting across central Arizona, dividing high ponderosa country from the desert below. Prescott to Alpine. One long stretch of remote forested rimrock, dropping thousands of feet in places, threaded by two-lane highways and gravel forest roads.
                

                  Three accounts, filed a century apart. Same country. Same thing.
                

1903

                        Newspaper account / near Grand Canyon
                      

                        An
                        Arizona Republican item describes a hunter named I. W. Stevens meeting something out past the rim. Long white hair. Matted beard. A scream he could not place.

                        That runs fifty-five years before anyone in California puts the word
                        Bigfoot in a newspaper. The Yavapai and Apache had a word for it long before Stevens did.

1944

                        Boy Scout camp / Tonto Creek
                      

                        A kid named Don Davis wakes up at the base of the Rim to something going through the camp supplies. Heavy footsteps cross the ground toward him and stop directly over his sleeping bag.

                        He remembers a hairless face. Massive shoulders. And — the detail he never let go of — a head that was
                        square.

                        It looked at him. Then it left. Davis grew up to become a cryptozoologist.

2015

                        Dashcam / State Route 260 near Payson
                      

                        July. A motorist films something tall and dark crossing the highway at twilight. It clears the road in two strides.

                        The dashcam era arrived. So did the Mogollon Monster.
