Piatella Hash: The Boldtbags Guide
Piatella, also known as piattella, is the latest innovation shaking up the hash world. Originating in Barcelona, Spain, this solventless preparation elevates traditional hash to new heights with modern technology.
At Boldtbags, we're diving into the Piatella method and refining our techniques. Mastering this process can yield a highly flavorful and lucrative product for solventless processors.
What Is Piatella?
Piatella is a specialty artisan hash crafted from fresh frozen bubble hash that undergoes freeze drying and long-term cold curing with minimal oxygen exposure. The outcome is a buttery extract brimming with terpenes, slicing like a loaf of super-soft bread.
The first award-winning piattella hash was created by Uncle's Farm, a social cannabis club in Barcelona, using 6-star full-melt ice water hash from La Sagrada Farms and Slite 23. This product earned 3rd place at Ego Clash in 2020, establishing Uncle's Farm as a top cannabis destination. Check out Jolly Roger's interview with Zio from Uncle's Farm on YouTube for more insights.
Why Is It Called Piatella?
Piatella, or piattella, derives from the Italian word "piatto," meaning "flat." The name reflects the method of vacuum sealing bubble hash completely flat for curing.
While "piattella" with a double "t" is the most accurate Italian spelling, many people anglicize it to "piatella," similar to how "café" is often written without an accent.
How Is Piatella Hash Made?
Several approaches exist for making piatella hash, all involving a lengthy cold curing process and vacuum sealing. Here’s the method we use at Boldtbags:
- Start with full-melt bubble hash made from fresh frozen cannabis and dried in a freeze dryer, resulting in a lighter color. Note that not all strains will produce true piatella form, so experimentation may be necessary.
- Seal 90μm-120μm hash in a small glass jar inside a refrigerator.
- Allow it to nucleate for 4-6 weeks.
- Open the jar and lightly whip the hash to homogenize.
- Remove the hash and place it inside cellophane to form a small flat brick.
- Let the cellophane-wrapped brick sit at room temperature until the terpenes start to sweat.
The result is a soft yet stable consistency that holds its shape when sliced, oozing with terpenes—the gold standard for piatella connoisseurs.
Difference Between Piatella and Temple Balls
Piatella and temple balls both originate from ice water hash. The key difference is that piatella is always kept cold, while temple balls are formed from bubble hash rolled over with hot water before compression.
How Is Piatella Hash Consumed?
Piatella is typically dabbed but can also be added to joints. It’s easier to handle with a dab tool compared to uncured bubble hash.
Is Piatella the Best Hash in the World?
Some enthusiasts claim that piatella is the best hash globally. It’s even appearing in Orlando dispensaries thanks to Sunburn Cannabis.
If you master this product, you could see consumers flocking to dispensaries nationwide. Have you tried making piatella (or piattella for purists)? Let us know your experience!
