Is Ikea furniture good, or is it just good enough? I’d argue most of the company’s inventory belongs in the latter category, but hiding amid the particleboard and polypropylene are a few buy-it-for-life gems. The Rimforsa work bench—with its sturdy stainless-steel frame and hefty bamboo butcher block top—is one of them. I purchased mine five years ago and it completely transformed my mediocre apartment rental kitchen. It might just transform yours too.

If My Apartment Caught Fire, I’d Take My Ikea Rimforsa With Me

This I know is true: As a writer I tend to lean on absurd hyperbole to make a point. So when I claim in a headline that I’d drag my 150-pound stainless-steel-and-bamboo kitchen island down from my three story walk-up if my apartment were to go up in flames, you could maybe call that a lie.

But beneath that untruth is a more earnest truth-truth, which is that I’ve developed a deep appreciation for the Rimforsa kitchen island I got from Ikea, and I think it might be the greatest piece of furniture I own.
