Today’s newsletter has meal ideas fit for a crowd and more:

What’s the best food you’ve ever had at a wedding? Mine is easily the Indian buffet (plus open bar) at my friends’ celebration in New Orleans. The dal palak fueled the crowd on the dance floor till 3 in the morning. Anyway! This month’s edition of Dear Bon Appétit, our cooking advice column, tackles a sensitive subject: cooking the food at your own wedding. What would you make?

What Are Budget-Friendly Recipes I Can Make for My 60-Person Wedding?

By Emma Laperruque

Dear Bon Appétit is an advice column where we answer your culinary conundrums with handpicked recipes and well-seasoned advice. Submit a question here.

My 60-person wedding is going to be a DIY affair at a small inn-turned-Airbnb. The big meals are going to be handled by professionals, but there’s a couple meals—Friday breakfast and lunch, Saturday breakfast—that we’re hoping to cobble together ourselves in the inn’s commercial kitchen. How can we (simply! not-too-expensively!) scale up and make sure everyone is well-fed? —I Do

Congrats are in order! Thanks for writing in about your big day—I’m honored. This is a great size for a guest list. My husband and I invited a similar range (scandalous in pre-pandemic times) and the room was overflowing, bountiful, raucous at times. The funny thing about a small wedding is…it’s still a lot of people.

And you’re right, it’s an entirely different beast than your everyday dinner party. I applaud you for tapping in friends. Delegation is—begging my editor to let me keep italics here—of the utmost importance. Not just because, unless you are a Top Chef contestant, feeding 60 people should not be a one-person endeavor. But also because, ahem, you’re the one getting married! As corny as it sounds, I hope that the top item on your to-do list is: Have fun. Everything else can wait, or should be someone else’s problem.

Okay, speech over. Here’s what to cook.

Finding My Way Back to the Kitchen After Giving Birth

By Caroline Chambers

Cooking—and feeding the people I love—had always been how I unwind, how I nourish my body and also my mind. But in those first months of motherhood, I gave it up entirely. Where was I supposed to put the baby while I cooked?

When my son was around five months old, my hormones started to un-wonky themselves. I found my way back to the kitchen. I learned to cook sideways so that no tiny baby toes got toasted on the skillet. I had planned to make sautéed zucchini with meatballs, but that felt too complicated, so the ground turkey got thrown into the pan. Leftover marinara and cheese from the fridge got stirred in for a quickie lasagna-esque situation.

It wasn’t remotely fancy, but it was delicious. And I had done it with the baby in tow!
