A special steak dinner, plus World Cup snacks for the finals |

Alert! New column just dropped. I’m delighted to introduce you to Me, Myself, and Dinner, our new series dedicated to cooking on your own. Most recipes serve multiple people. So if you live alone, or just have a night to yourself, the math isn’t mathing. You have to scale a recipe down (which doesn’t always work), or accept the fact that you’ll be eating leftovers to no end (which no one wants). Each month, we’ll share one doable-to-make, fun-to-eat recipe for one, plus the personal perspective behind it. Like the perfect single-serve steak cut, how you can absolutely crush an entire block of tofu, and why omelet should never be plural. I can’t contain my excitement for this first edition from food director Chris Morocco, which you can find below. |

Cooking for myself is a rare treat. Most weekdays are a maelstrom of work, kids’ schedules, long commutes, and dinners to suit the needs of everyone. That’s just what being a parent is. But as a professional cook, it’s limiting. Weeknight meals inevitably involve some amount of compromise: bottled marinara here, a pouch of refried beans there. Catch me alone in the kitchen, though, and it’s a whole different story. I delight in the foods that might raise eyebrows with my family. I snack as I prep, often some caramelly aged Gouda, or a handful of pistachios whose shells compete for space on my cutting board. The music is anything by Bill Evans Trio, the most calming jazz I know, that I dance terribly to while my cats judge me from their climbing tower. And the menu is something that’s special to eat but simple to pull off. |

The 2026 FIFA World Cup finals are on Sunday and I’m busy planning my game day menu. The energy around the World Cup in the US this last month has been downright invigorating. The country has been hit with a jolt of adrenaline, as we’ve joined together in our appreciation of ranch dressing and fandom of Norwegian star Erling Haaland; said goodbye to the ultimate underdog team that stole all our hearts (Cabo Verde and its tireless goalkeeper, Vozinha); and basked in the brotherly love between party-hard hermanos Mexico and South Korea. Even if you haven’t been following along, well, it isn’t too late. In this final week of the World Cup, gather your friends who love soccer, and your friends who just love Buffalo chicken dip (my gift link to you—it’s too good not to share). Both important here! Below we’ve got snacks paying homage to the semifinalist teams, plus some watch party standbys and drinks too. Soak in the collective joy, then bottle it up for the next four years. |
