Happy Juneteenth.
Let me be straight with you... this one means something to us.
Today is the day we celebrate freedom. Real freedom. And as a Black-owned brand built by a father and son in Atlanta, we couldn't let it pass without saying something.
FIRST, THE HISTORY
Here's the thing a lot of folks don't know.
The Emancipation Proclamation was signed back on January 1, 1863. On paper, slavery was over. But paper and reality are two different things.
Word didn't reach everybody. Down in Texas, the news was held back for more than two years.
Then on June 19, 1865, Union troops rode into Galveston, Texas. A general named Gordon Granger stood up and read the order out loud. Everybody is free. No exceptions.
Over 250,000 people learned they were free that day. Two and a half years late... but free.
They celebrated in the street. They called it Juneteenth. June plus the nineteenth. And people have been celebrating it ever since.
In 2021, it finally became a national holiday. The oldest celebration of the end of slavery in this country. Damn... about time.
WHY IT MATTERS TO US
Freedom isn't just a word around here. It's the whole story.
