That 4pm chaos isn't a discipline problem. It's a floor-plan problem. Preschool classrooms solved it decades ago: arrange the room around activities, not furniture. Give every play mode its own territory, and kids move through the room in self-directed loops for an hour or more.

The 5-zone system (sized for real homes)

1. Movement zone: climbing, swinging, hanging, crashing. ~6.5 × 6.5 ft including clearance (buying guide).
2. Creation zone: drawing, dough, crafts. A child-height table, ~4 × 4 ft.
3. Building zone: blocks, tiles, tracks. A flat rug.
4. Pretend zone: dress-up, kitchens, stores. A 3 × 3 ft corner.
5. Quiet zone: books, puzzles, calming down. The corner farthest from the action.

Most zones are the size of a rug. You don't need five rooms. You need five territories.

Save this: the 3 placement rules

1. Separate loud from quiet. A reading nook next to a swing is a reading nook nobody reads in.

2. Give movement its clearance. Empty floor around the gym, not shelving. The landing area stays open. Full clearances and mats: the 15-point safety checklist.

3. Make movement visible. Environment beats willpower: proximity and availability are the biggest predictors of whether kids actually use active equipment. A gym they walk past twenty times a day gets climbed twenty times a day.

The movement zone is the anchor because it's the only zone that regulates the child using the other four. Psychologist Lev Vygotsky observed that in play, a child operates "a head taller" than in ordinary life. The room you set up this month is the room your kid grows in all year.
