Quick question. What did you earn last year? Now, what did you earn the year before?

Every one of us carries a number, deep down, for what a person like us is supposed to earn. I call it your self-concept level of income, and here is the law I have taught for forty years.
You will earn within ten percent of that number until it moves.
Earn more than it and you get uncomfortable. You spend it, you ease off, the number drifts back. Earn less and you scramble until you are back inside the band. Most people run that loop for twenty years and never see it.
Where did the number come from? Not from you. From other people, a long time ago, and it has been quietly running your finances ever since.
