Quick question.
What did you earn last year?
Now, what did you earn the year before?
If you are like most people, those two numbers are close. Closer than you would like. Even if one of those years you worked harder than you ever have.
That is not the economy. And it is not you.
It is a setting.
Every one of us carries a number, deep down, for what a person like us is supposed to earn. I call it your self-concept level of income. And here is the law I have taught for forty years:
You will earn within ten percent of that number until it moves.
Earn more than it, and you get uncomfortable. You spend it, you ease up, the number drifts back. Earn less, and you scramble until you are back inside the band. Most people run that loop for twenty years and never see it.
Where did the number come from? Not from you. From somebody else, a long time ago. What your family said about money. What people like us earn. It went in early, and it has been quietly running your finances ever since.
Here is the good news, and it is the reason I wrote your book.
The book measures it. Your seven answers priced the life you want, which is your Goal Number. Seven more, and it reads where your ceiling is set right now. Then it puts the two numbers side by side, with your name on the cover.
The distance between them is the whole game. Chapter one is about closing it.
