Opening Pandora's invisible box

Happy Saturday! Yesterday we asked for a valid Blossom word that refers to a form of silent communication that, when the first letter is removed, becomes another valid word describing a different form of silent communication. We can stay quiet no longer! The answers we were looking for were MIMING and IMING (as in, "instant messaging")! This challenge proved to be a bit trickier than we anticipated, but many people sent in creative solutions! One reader suggested dropping the last letter instead of the first with SIGNING (as in sign language) and SIGNIN (e.g., writing one's name at a doctor's office). Another offered up OMISSION (leaving something unsaid) and MISSION (as in a stealth operation)—pretty sneaky! And while we could definitely see MOONING as a creative entry for the first half of the challenge, OONING simply doesn't cover the back half. Thanks to everyone who gave us the not-so-silent treatment! If you're interested in more letter-perfect wordplay, check out this quiz!
