Happy Thursday! Yesterday, we set a high-water mark for obscure Tightrope themes, and you all rose to the challenge! Several players pieced together that late in the evening on June 10, 1770, James Cook's ship, HMS Endeavour, ran aground on Australia's Great Barrier Reef while circumnavigating the globe. Cook is often credited with being the first European to discover the reef, albeit the hard way.
How does a question about sauerkraut relate to Cook's run-in with the reef? We relish the chance to answer! During the 1700s, scurvy, brought on by a lack of vitamin C, was the scourge of the seven seas. James Cook's crew had curiously few cases of scurvy thanks in part to feeding his sailors lots of sauerkraut, which is rich in vitamin C.
Hopefully this tough theme didn't leave you "cooked"! Thanks to everyone who wrote in, and special shout-outs to the following salty sea dogs: Deb in Deerfield Beach, FL; Robin Prevade in Pittsburgh, PA; and Sue Lane in Essex, UK.
