There's something going into your bread next year, and most people don't know about it.
From the end of 2026, the UK are changing the law and forcing companies to put folic acid in white flour.
What does that mean?When you buy bread, pasta, cakes, biscuits (anything with white flour in it) you're eating folic acid every time.
So why are they doing it? The official reason is birth defects. Folate lowers the risk of spina bifida in babies, so the idea is to get more folate into everyone through bread. Sounds great.
The way they're doing it is where it falls apart. Here's the difference.
Folate (natural) - the one you want
Folic Acid (synthetic) - you do not want this versionFolate is the natural form, the one your body uses as is.
Folic acid is the man-made version. Your body has to convert folic acid into the active form before it does anything, and a big chunk of people don't convert it well.
The government went with the cheap synthetic version. Dont they have experts to consult with ?

Folate is the natural one, it's vitamin B your body finds in greens and liver and uses straight away.Folic acid is the synthetic copy. Made in a lab. The synthetic stuff your body fails to process builds up in your blood.

Loads of people also carry a gene called MTHFR that slows the conversion down even more.
For them, the synthetic dose does next to nothing.
So why are they putting the cheap synthetic version in the nation's bread instead of the real active one?The synthetic version is a lot cheaper and lasts longer on a shelf, maybe that is a key reason ?

Immune system.Leftover folic acid in your blood is linked to a 23% drop in your natural killer cells. Those are the cells that hunt down virus-infected and cancer cells. Even the CDC points to this one.

NHS advice?
The NHS tells people with cancer, people with a heart stent, and people low in B12 to avoid folic acid.
The same system is about to bake it into everyone's bread.
There's a petition asking the government to keep folic-acid-free flour on the shelves.

Surprised by how good these were
"Normally I wait quite a long time to review on efficacy as recommended. But this one is an exception. This is an expensive supplement (not complaining about this) and as 75 year olds we (me + husband) had to think carefully about trying it.
So when within the first two weeks we both felt a definite improvement in our energy levels - especially nodding off in the evenings - we were surprised and delighted. Nonetheless I still waited cautiously to see if it was just a fluke. It wasn't.
Okay, we are not now desperate to go out clubbing every night but we are both less tired and feel like we have more stamina and can do more. We do take Creatine as well which may be the magic combo I don't know.

"I have been using BS supplements for quite some time now - currently magnesium glycinate, B12, plant sterols and resveratrol. I have type 2 diabetes and have been taking Metformin since my initial diagnosis - not particularly happy with this seeing as it is banned in some country in Europe! -
and have recently discovered that it also affects the absorption of B12 .... so I now take my B12 supplement at a completely different time. I have started with the plant sterols and resveratrol in the hope / expectation that it will help with my cholesterol readings at my next diabetes check-up .....
