Butterbur. The herb almost nobody talks about.Most people have never heard of it. But butterbur's been growing wild across Britain and Europe for thousands of years, and people have been using it for just as long. Where the name comes fromLong before fridges, people used the plant's massive leaves to wrap their butter and keep it cool in the summer heat. That's where the name comes from. The Greeks named it after their wide-brimmed sun hats too, because the leaves are big enough to shelter under. Centuries in the medicine bagIn the Middle Ages, they used it against plague and fever. By the 1600s, it was being used for coughs, asthma and wounds, and down the years for spasms, bladder trouble and headaches too.We, the people, have trusted and used this plant for a very long time. How it actually worksButterbur makes its own compounds called petasins (its in our Butterbur). They block leukotrienes and calm the calcium signalling that drives inflammation and spasm. In plain English, they settle down the exact overreaction that has your nose streaming and your chest tight when the pollen's up. It went toe to toe with the hay fever drugs. This is the part you can go and check yourself; it's all on PubMed. In 2002, the BMJ ran butterbur head-to-head against cetirizine, a standard hay fever antihistamine. They came out level. The difference? the drowsiness and fatigue turned up in the drug group, not the butterbur group. "Our randomised, double blind study showed that the effects of butterbur (ZE 339 extract tablets) are similar to those of cetirizine in patients with seasonal allergic rhinitis.
Butterbur did not produce the sedative effects associated with antihistamines and was well tolerated by patients. The effects of this herbal treatment were confirmed by both patients and doctors."Link to the paper: https://doi.org/10.1136/bmj.324.7330.144A bigger trial in 2005, 330 people, tested it against fexofenadine (the active in Telfast) and a dummy pill. The herb matched the drug, and both beat the dummy. "Butterbur Ze 339 and Fexofenadine are comparably efficacious relative to placebo. Despite being a herbal drug, Butterbur Ze 339 has now been subject to a series of well controlled trials and should be considered as an alternative treatment for IAR."Butterbur Ze 339 gives you 24mg of petasins per dose. Dry eyes
"Have took these vitamin A along with the Iron supplement
for 5 months having suffered with chronic dry eyes for 3/4 years confirmed by opticians with dye drops I had large dry patches on each eye ball with nothing I took helping , omega , flaxseed supplements etc
and only being advised to keep using the eye drops by opticians, even though they were no use, I went down a rabbit hole researching this condition and found information about iron deficiency and vitamin A deficiency can be a cause of dry eyes,
