FALL IN LOVE WITH CHINESE FLAVORS (& JON KUNG)

Last year we became Jon Kung super-fans. His step-by-step cooking videos welcomed us into his world of third-culture Chinese cuisine. But it's his casual confidence, thoughtfulness around the mingling of food and identity and perfectly timed humor that made us truly fall in love.

His cooking philosophy is all about trusting your instincts and having fun, and his fearless approach to cooking is infectious. We’re also fans of his sweet pup and taste-tester, Mochi, who has so much star power that we put her on the labels of the three new blends that we made with Jon.

Dreams do come true. We turned our adoration into a collaboration, working with Jon on three spice blends inspired by regional Chinese cooking and the greater Chinese diaspora. Master Stock, Smoldering Embers and Shimmer Salt were created with distinct applications, but just like Jon’s style of fusion cooking, these warming, savory blends work with all kinds of dishes.

MASTER STOCK

Named for the Cantonese braising stock that combines warming spices with fresh aromatics like ginger, scallion and a hearty dose of soy sauce, Master Stock is a sweet, fragrant, full-bodied blend. Inspired by Chinese Five Spice, this blend is perfect as a rub for light proteins like chicken or tofu, or swirled into simmering soy sauce and cooked with vegetables. Add it to baked goods, like your favorite cinnamon roll recipe, and you’ve got a brand-new favorite with nine times the flavor.

FULL-BODIED FLAVOR

SMOLDERING EMBERS

Inhale the aroma of this deeply savory blend and get transported beside a charcoal grill, where succulent meat and mushrooms are sizzling over—you guessed it—smoldering embers. Cumin and garlic are the stars of the show, making it the perfect seasoning for lamb, beef and even seitan. Coriander and star anise bring warming sweetness, and black Urfa chili and smoked black cardamom add some smoky heat. Big and bold, this blend also has a softer side that pairs with roasted tomatoes and juicy veggies like eggplant or peppers.

MAKE IT TASTE SMOLDERING GOOD

SHIMMER SALT

Every dish needs a final flourish. That’s where Shimmer Salt makes its grand entrance. This seasoned salt is buzzing with our grapefruit-y wild Timur pepper (a relative of Sichuan peppercorns, with the same tongue-tingling sensation) and zesty black lime. It’s the final vibrant note for anything that has been cooked with Smoldering Embers, but it also adds intrigue to avocado toast, a hearty salad full of tender vegetables or a steamy rice bowl with a perfectly jammy egg.
