Her Protein Powder Was Quietly Working Against Her

A patient brought her protein powder to her appointment last month. She'd been using it daily for six weeks. Good brand. Popular on Amazon. "Clean" label. Organic.

I ran her labs. Her blood lead level had climbed from 0.8 to 2.1 µg/dL.

She thought the problem was her diet. It was her supplement.

The Clean Label Project went bigger: 160 protein powders, over 35,000 individual tests. Nearly half exceeded California Prop 65 safety limits for toxic metals.

Three Patterns Stood Out

Plant-based powders contained 9x more lead than whey-based, on average. The soil plants grow in absorbs heavy metals, and they concentrate up the supply chain.

Chocolate-flavored powders had 4x more lead than vanilla. Cacao beans accumulate lead from the soil and from processing equipment. Vanilla flavoring doesn't carry the same burden.

"Organic" doesn't mean clean. Organic products averaged 3x more lead and 2x more cadmium than conventional ones. Organic certification checks farming practices, not finished-product contamination.

Your body can't flush lead the way it handles other toxins. It accumulates in bones and soft tissue over months and years. Daily protein powder means daily exposure.

Two Things to Check Before Your Next Scoop

Ask for the COA

Not just "GMP certified" or "made in the USA." You want a Certificate of Analysis showing actual lead, cadmium, arsenic, and mercury levels per serving. Less than 2% of supplement companies carry independent purity certifications.

Choose whey, vanilla if plant-based

Whey tests lower for heavy metals across both studies. If you need plant-based, vanilla flavors test far cleaner than chocolate.
