"I drink water all day."
A patient told me this last month. When I asked her to track it for a week, she averaged 32 ounces -- half of what she needed. She was not lying. She genuinely believed she was drinking enough.
|
The problem? Her medication had quietly turned down her thirst signal. Most people know GLP-1 medications reduce appetite. Fewer know they also reduce thirst. Published research confirms GLP-1 receptor agonists have a hypodipsic effect -- meaning they suppress the urge to drink water, separate from any effect on hunger.
The Two-Part Problem
1 |
Your gut is already moving slower.
GLP-1 medications slow gastric emptying and reduce intestinal transit speed. Food sits longer in the colon, and the colon keeps absorbing water from stool the entire time it sits there.
|
2 |
You are not replacing the water your colon is pulling.
Suppressed thirst means you drink less without noticing. The stool gets drier and harder to pass. A February 2026 Medscape review found that decreased gastric and intestinal secretion on GLP-1 therapy reduces stool water content directly.

3 Things I Tell Patients in Clinic
💧 |
Set water reminders.
Do not wait until you feel thirsty. Your thirst signal is unreliable right now. Aim for 64 ounces minimum (8 cups). Use a timed app or a marked water bottle.
|

Add soluble fiber slowly.
Psyllium husk absorbs water and adds bulk, giving the colon something to push against. But fiber without water makes constipation worse. Start with a half dose and increase over two weeks. Our Low FODMAP Psyllium will not irritate sensitive stomachs.
|
🏃 |
Walk after meals.
A Cleveland Clinic gastroenterologist confirmed in March 2026 that post-meal walking shortens the time food sits in the stomach and improves fullness and abdominal discomfort. Even 10 minutes helps. Movement activates the gastrocolic reflex, which signals your colon to contract.

If Water and Fiber Are Not Enough
If you have tried increasing water and fiber and still struggle, a targeted motility support can help. Our GLP-1 Regularity Companion uses herbal motility support that works with your body's rhythm, not against it.

The fix for most patients starts with a water bottle and a phone timer. Small changes, measurable relief within a week.
