Intuition vs anxiety banner

Hi there,

Welcome to this week's Monday Mindset Mastery.

You're about to make a decision. Something in your body tightens. Your mind speeds up. You feel uncertain, unsettled, pulled in two directions.

Is that your intuition telling you something's wrong? Or is it anxiety playing tricks on you?

This is one of the most common questions we hear from our community, and one of the most genuinely difficult to answer. This week, we're going to try.

Before we dive in, this month every course in our catalogue is just £27, and every purchase automatically enters you into a draw to win a brand new iPad. Use code GIFT27 at checkout.

Two Voices, Very Different Messages

Intuition and anxiety can feel remarkably similar on the surface. Both arrive as a feeling rather than a thought. Both can be physical: a tightness in the chest, a flutter in the stomach, a sudden shift in energy. Both can be insistent.

But they come from very different places, and when you learn to recognise the difference, it changes everything.

Anxiety is fear-based. It tends to spiral. It asks "what if" and then answers itself with the worst possible scenario. It's loud, repetitive and urgent, and it often gets louder the more you engage with it. Anxiety pulls you into the future, into hypothetical catastrophes that haven't happened and may never happen.

Intuition, by contrast, is quiet. It doesn't spiral. It doesn't argue. It arrives once, clearly, and tends to stay consistent even when you try to talk yourself out of it. Where anxiety is frantic, intuition is still. Where anxiety escalates when you pay attention to it, intuition tends to feel calmer the more you settle into it.

Another key distinction is timing. Anxiety tends to appear when you're thinking about the future. Intuition tends to arise in the present moment, as a response to what's actually in front of you.

Learning to Listen to the Right Voice

The challenge is that most of us spent years in environments that weren't safe for intuitive listening. We were taught to be rational, to weigh things up, to not trust our feelings. And so both intuition and anxiety were left unexamined, tangled up together.

nervous system regulation infographic

The first step to distinguishing them is getting your nervous system regulated. When you're dysregulated — stressed, tired, overwhelmed — anxiety dominates and it's almost impossible to hear anything else. When you're calm and grounded, intuition has space to surface.

This is why practices like breathwork, mindfulness and somatic awareness aren't just wellness buzzwords. They're the literal prerequisites for intuitive access. You can't hear the quiet voice when the loud one is running the room.

Once you're regulated, try asking yourself: Is this feeling pointing me towards something, or away from something? Intuition tends to be directional and purposeful. Anxiety tends to simply say no to everything.

📖 From the CoE Blog This Week: How to Meditate Spiritually

How to meditate spiritually blog image

The distinction between intuition and anxiety connects deeply to the practice of stillness: learning to be quiet enough to hear what's actually there.

This is one of our most enduring pieces, and it speaks directly to this week's theme. It explores meditation not just as a stress-reduction tool but as a practice of deepening your relationship with your inner world, including learning to recognise and trust the quieter signals that are easy to miss. If you've been curious about a more intentional meditation practice, this is a wonderful place to start.

student of the week banner

This week's Student of the Week is Karen, and her story is one of the most moving we've had the privilege of sharing. In 2023, Karen experienced what she describes as a complete life crash - trauma, bereavement and a significant decline in her physical health, all at once, and largely without family close by. Just three months later, she enrolled with Centre of Excellence and began rebuilding, starting with our Naturopathy and Diet and Nutrition Advisor courses. For Karen, they were tools for healing.

What followed is remarkable. Karen has now completed seven courses with us, earned full Practitioner Membership with the Complementary Medical Association, and is due to graduate this August with an OTHM qualification in Law and Psychology. She plans to use everything she's built to support other trauma survivors in finding their own way forward. We love you, Karen. 💛

One Final Thing

Your intuition is not the enemy of reason. It is reason's partner, the accumulated wisdom of everything you've experienced and observed, surfacing as a felt sense when you need it most.

The work is simply to create the conditions in which you can hear it.

This week, when something arises that you're not sure how to read, pause before you respond to it. Breathe. Notice whether it settles or spirals. Let that be your guide.
