I need to talk to somebody about what happened last week, and since you're familia, I figured you'd understand.
In case you missed it, Tommy's birthday was this past Sunday. And for the last few weeks I've been sneaking into your inbox asking you cousins to send in birthday wishes for him through a secret form I put together.
The whole idea was to surprise him with a big collection of messages and videos from the familia. Very thoughtful, right? I was very proud of this plan.
Well, it turns out Tommy knew the whole time. From the very first email I sent, he was already in on it.
But here's the part that really got me... it wasn't just Tommy.
The whole team at Casa Chong knew too. Apparently Tommy was messaging them behind the scenes, cracking jokes about the whole thing, and they were all just playing along, letting me think I was running this big secret operation.
Nodding along on every Facetime call with "Great idea, Cheech." "Nobody will say a word, Cheech." "This is going to be such a surprise, Cheech."
I found all of this out after the fact, by the way. After the birthday. After I had already sent all the emails.
I've been in this business for fifty years and I've worked with some of the best comedians in the world, and I got got by my own team.
Now, I was going to take Tommy out for a nice birthday dinner as a real celebration.
But you know what, I think I already gave him the greatest gift I possibly could. I gave that man a full week of feeling like the funniest guy in the room at 88 years old, and apparently that's priceless.
(He's lucky I love him.)
In all seriousness, happy belated birthday to Tommy Chong, the sneakiest 88-year-old on the planet. I hope you all had a wonderful Memorial Day weekend and got some good food and good sunshine in.
