A lot of us grew up being told there was something wrong with us because of the shit we loved. Called weird. Made fun of for how we dressed. Told anime was weird. Told dressing up was weird. Told the music we listened to was weird. Told the shit we collected was childish. Told to grow up. Get help. Be normal.

After getting casted out enough times, you eventually stop asking to be accepted. You stop trying to fit into their world and you go find your own.

That’s how a lot of us found anime, cosplay, gaming, music, art, fashion and all these weird little subcultures. Places full of people who understood what it felt like to be obsessed with something everybody else thought was fkn weird.

And somewhere along the way, we found each other. Turns out the weird kids were never alone. There were millions of us.

That’s why we say Roses From Concrete.

A rose isn't supposed to grow through concrete. There’s no perfect soil. Nobody watered it. Nobody made some beautiful little place for it to grow. That shit was supposed to die there.

But somehow that mf found a crack and bloomed anyway. That’s us.

We weren't supposed to fit in, so we stopped fkn trying. We weren't supposed to become the cool kids. We weren't supposed to turn all the weird shit we loved into something this big.

But here the fvck we are.

Anime NYC reminded me exactly why we built this. Thousands of people walking into our world dressed however they wanted, cosplaying whoever they wanted and loving what they love without apologizing or explaining themselves to anybody. That’s freedom to me.

So if you've ever been called weird, casted out, misunderstood, told to change, told to grow up or made to feel like there was something wrong with you because you weren't like everybody else...

You're one of us.
