San Diego Mosque Shooting: Lessons in Security and Skill Two attackers opened fire outside the Islamic Center of San Diego on May 18, killing three before being found dead in a nearby vehicle. The Center's security guard, Amin Abdullah, recognized the threat, engaged before the attackers could push deeper into the building, and likely bought the time that kept more than a dozen students and staff alive. He didn't make it home. Two things to sit with: the physical security investments the Center made (bulletproof windows, perimeter fencing, contracted security) shaped how this ended even though they didn't prevent it — and well-trained defenders still sometimes lose fights.
