Dry Fire Safety: How to Practice at Home Without a Negligent Discharge

Dry fire safety best practices

Dry fire is the cheapest training you will ever do. It is also the only time you deliberately press the trigger on a real gun inside your house. That contradiction is the whole problem, and checking that the gun is empty once is not a plan.

Twelve practices here worth building into every session. The verification sequence that does not become a mindless ritual. Keeping live ammunition out of the room entirely instead of on the table next to you. A formal start and a formal stop. And the rule that an interruption ends the session, full stop.

Number nine is the one that gets people. You finish, you reload your carry gun, you look at the target across the room, and you think about one more rep.

S14E7 Justified Saves, Shooting at Shadows S14E7: JUSTIFIED SAVES, Shooting at Shadows
Four cases where somebody fired at something they had not actually identified. A Florida homeowner shooting through a closed front door. An Arizona homeowner firing at a shadow near a window. A Virginia father who blocked in a delivery driver over a speeding complaint while his kids watched from the yard. A Tulsa business owner who drew during a conversation about a repossessed truck. Then the saves, including a bank customer who stepped in when a robber pulled a knife on the tellers, and a woman in Broward County who had nowhere left to go. Jacob and I work through the legal exposure and the tactical calls on each one.

Pistol Red Dot Mastery course

The pistol red dot isn't a passing trend — it's the future of defensive shooting. Yet for many shooters, adopting an optic brings confusion, frustration, and doubt. Carry Optics Mastery is a step-by-step online course that removes that uncertainty and helps you build total confidence in your optic, your shooting, and your ability to defend yourself.

Article of the Week:

Empty Arguments over Empty Chambers

Rich Grassi watched another online fight about carrying a semiauto with an empty chamber and decided to write down why that argument never goes anywhere.

His case is not the one you expect. It is not about speed to the first hit. It is about Rule 1. Condition Three carry quietly trains you to handle a gun as though it is not loaded, and he can name roughly a dozen accidents where the reflex afterward was the same three words.

What do you do with that gun after the shooting stops? Cold hands, blown pupils, other armed people in the parking lot, and you are standing there trying to download a round because holstering it would not be safe.

When Was Your Last Class?

The Guardian Conference is this week. Here is why that matters even if you are not coming.

This week is our annual Guardian Conference. Most of you reading this will not be there, and that is fine. Not everybody can swing it every year. Schedules, budgets, work, family. I get it.

But it does make this a good week for me to ask you a question I already know some of you will not like.

When was the last time you took a class?

Not range time. Not reading. Not watching videos, including ours. Formal instruction, with somebody watching you work and telling you what you are actually doing instead of what you think you are doing.

If the answer comes back in years rather than months, this is the week to fix that. Fall is good training weather almost everywhere, and most instructors have their remaining dates on the calendar right now.

And if you want to make next year the year, a week from today GuardianConference dot com should be updated with our 2027 dates. Put them on the calendar early, because that is usually the difference between going and meaning to go.

You do not have to come to our conference. But if it has been a year or two or more since anybody gave you real instruction, change that.

Stay Safe,

Riley Bowman - Director of Training

P.S. If you only have time for one thing this week, make it the Saint David case in the episode. A homeowner fired at a shadow near a window. Everything that mattered was decided in about a second and a half.
