I know a lot of people on this email list are hunters, hikers, campers, and generally the kind of people who like getting away from civilization.
So I wanted to point you toward a fantastic guide the team at Mountain Man Medical recently put together about medical preparedness in the backcountry.
Here's one of the ideas that really stood out to me:
Two miles isn't far.
If you're hunting or hiking, being a mile or two from the truck barely feels remote. In good weather, on decent terrain, that's an easy distance.
But now imagine those same two miles with a severe bleed. Or a penetrating chest injury. Or a broken leg. Or a hunting partner who can't walk.
Suddenly two miles is a very long way.
And distance is only part of the problem. Cell service may be nonexistent. Weather can turn. Terrain can make rescue difficult. Even if you successfully call for help, that doesn't mean help can immediately get to you.
Meanwhile, the clock on a serious traumatic injury started the moment it happened.
That's the problem Mountain Man Medical tackles in this guide.
