One of the boldest new games to release recently, Marathon by Bungie is a dark sci-fi game set in a derelict colony on Tau Ceti IV. The striking 'maximalist minimalist' art style pairs high-contrast color-blocked utilitarian structures with a hostile planet, and sharp industrial graphics and motion design with character designs inspired by cycling kits, Olympic ski suits, Neo Tokyo and chip architecture. Curved surfaces are juxtaposed with the straight labels, instructions, and markings that evoke the bureaucracy of a near-future spacefaring civilization. This is a sci-fi world built from bright, clean plastics and carbon rather than heavy metal. The game's art style feels retro, contemporary, and futuristic all at once, and serves as the wrapper for a brilliant extraction shooter.
