Why do babies fight sleep?

Babies do a lot of confusing things. Fighting sleep is near the top of the list.

You'll do everything right. Warm bath, fresh diaper, one last feeding. Your baby will be yawning. Practically falling asleep in your arms.

Then you try to put them down.

Suddenly, they’re crying and wide-awake like you did it all wrong. What’s happening? Why won't they just sleep when they’re obviously tired? Well, this happens to almost every parent, and there’s a whole science behind it. We asked Dr. Shernell Surratt-Gary , D.O. to explain this puzzling baby behaviour and how to deal with it.

What does “fighting sleep” even mean?

For starters, when we say babies "fight sleep," it doesn’t mean they're being difficult on purpose. According to Sr. Surratt-Gary, “In most situations, infants "fight" against sleeping due to a physiological mismatch between the baby's biological sleep pressure and the environment.” Sleep isn't something you argue a body into. It happens when the nervous system calms down enough to let go. When your baby can't sleep, something is blocking that process.

The science behind the sleep resistance

They're overtired
If babies stay awake too long, their bodies release stress hormones to keep them alert. Now they're exhausted but can't settle. The window closed.

Too much going on
Screens. Loud toys. A long cry. It floods their system. Their brain stays lit up.

Sleep regression
Sleep breaks down at 4 months, 6 months, 8-10 months, and 12 months. This lines up with big leaps in development. Temporary, but also brutal.

Teething pain
Most babies start around 6 months. It hurts and pain interrupts sleep.

Practicing new skills
Rolling. Sitting. Crawling. Their brain works on it at night. You'll see them moving instead of sleeping.

They dropped a nap
Around 12-15 months, the morning nap disappears. Bedtime might get harder for a few weeks while they adjust.

Signs you've missed the sleep window

Crying that won't stop
Arching their back
Refusing to be held or put down
Getting hyper or suddenly playful
Fighting you when you try to soothe them
Eyes wide open even though they were just yawning

What helps reduce sleep-fighting

The goal isn't to make your baby stop fighting sleep. It's to figure out what's causing the resistance in the first place. When your baby struggles with sleep every single time, something specific is usually going on. Look at the reasons and see what fits your situation.

Watch the wake windows
Newborns can stay awake 60-90 minutes. Older babies get a bit longer. Miss that window and they cross into overtired. Watch the clock, not just the yawning.
Catch the early signs
Yawning and eye rubbing come late. Look earlier. Getting quiet. Staring blankly. Moving less. Act when you see these.
Wait before the transfer
Baby falls asleep in your arms. Wait 20 minutes before you put them down. They need time to drop from light sleep into deep sleep. You'll know when their body goes limp.
Wind down early
No screens an hour before bed. No loud toys. No roughhousing. Dim the lights. Keep voices soft.
Build a routine
Same order every night. Bath, diaper, feed, white noise, crib. Predictability signals what's coming.
Set up the room
Dark, blackout curtains help. White noise masks sudden sounds. Temperature between 68-72°F.

What to do when your baby is already fighting sleep

Stop trying to force it
If your baby is crying, arching, and clearly distressed, putting them down again won't help. Take a break. Reset.
Go back to calming mode
Pick them up and bounce gently. Rock. Sing. Whatever usually soothes them. You need to bring their stress levels down before sleep can happen.
Try movement
Sometimes a walk outside or even just walking around the house helps. Movement and fresh air can reset their nervous system.
Give it time
Your baby might need 20-30 minutes of calming before they're ready to try again. That's okay. Rushing it will just make things worse.
