I’m kind of a nightmare when it comes to finding white jeans. I want them slightly slouchy and relaxed, but not too oversized, in a timeless shape that looks and feels vintage, without any holes or distressing. They need to be white, but not in a blindingly bright, Ross Geller teeth sort of way. Clearly, I have a lot of opinions.

I questioned whether it was too late in the season to do this roundup, but when I asked what I should try on next, white denim was the clear winner. And I happen to agree, since they’re a year-round staple for me, and finding a pair that meets all my requirements was way harder than I expected.

So I ordered 18 pairs, tried them all on, and narrowed the list down to the nine I'd actually recommend. One pair checked every box, and they're just over $100.

For reference, I'm 5'6½" and usually wear a size 28.

My take: These feel chill in an understated way. Good combo of a nipped-in waist and wide legs that taper nicely.

Stretch: Minimal
Shape/Fit: The fitted waist, relaxed drape, and dropped crotch make these chic in a can’t-quite-put-your-finger-on-it sort of way.
My take: These are an investment, but the fit is quite flawless. Most of the wider-leg options pool on the floor, and these hit just above.

Shape/Fit: A cropped barrel jean that’s fitted at the waist with a relaxed leg.
My take: I like the contrast piping, but wish you couldn’t see the outline of the pockets. Some barrel jeans are almost costumey in their over-the-top shape, but these feel like an unfussy option.
