Slow. Token-hungry. Twice the cost of Opus 4.8. When is Fable 5 worth it?

Claude's Fable 5 is, by most measures, the best AI model in the world right now. Coding, reasoning, and vision. It tops key benchmarks.

The question isn't "is Fable 5 good?" It's "when is it worth it?"

Fable 5 costs twice as much to run as Opus 4.8, the next model down in Claude's lineup. $10 per million input tokens versus $5, and $50 per million output versus $25. It's also more token-hungry, which means the 2x sticker price understates the real cost gap on a given task.

Slow. Token-hungry. Twice the cost of Opus 4.8. When is Fable 5 worth it?

So when does that premium pay off?

Long, autonomous jobs graded only on the final result. The kind where small errors compound with no feedback to catch them, and the more capable model pulls ahead. SWE-Bench Pro (an AI benchmark that tests how well models handle real, complex coding tasks) is the clearest case: Fable 5 solved 80.3% of coding tasks correctly vs Opus 4.8's 69.2%. For quicker, everyday work, the extra spend is harder to justify, which is why matching the model to the job matters.

Good news: prompting well matters more than picking the priciest model. Here's a clear, 3-step prompt framework that can push a cheaper model closer to the top performer:

1

Set the stage: Your role, your goal, and any context Claude needs to give a relevant answer instead of a generic one

2

Define the task: Not "write about X," but the exact output: format, length, audience

3

Specify the rules: Show, don't just tell. Tone, constraints, and an example of what "good" looks like

Get this right, and it holds regardless of which model's on the other end.

The Claude 101 course covers the full framework of best practices for everyday work. Created by Anthropic, adapted for the DataCamp platform. 100% free for all learners.

Cheaper, faster... more wrong? The Grok 4.5 trade-off

Grok 4.5 costs about $2.50 per coding task versus Fable 5's $11.80. But its hallucination rate jumped from 25% to 54%, even as accuracy improved.
