Hello and welcome back to Declutter Fast

I have a little "hide-away" where I go to really concentrate.

Everything's set up there so I can live there for days at at time.

You always hear about writers doing this... but I found out that just because you have a place to concentrate - does *not* mean that you *will actually concentrate.*

But I finally got the hang of it.

Fewer distractions really *does* help.

In this hide-away, there's no TV.

I wasn't about to call up a cable company either. No way.

However... I do have this habit of watching "Law and Order" reruns. My weekly peek into the 1990s has become quite the ritual too. And it has to be watched "live." Netflix is not the same!

But I thought to myself.... this hide-away is a perfect chance to declutter TV time and get serious about it.

And to see what it's really like to have no TV.

Because I can tell myself I don't watch much TV. And I don't...

But no tv? Or no movies at home? That could be very different.

This is a great exercise for the cause, I decided!

So...

At first it was very different! Very quiet. More than I expected it to be.

The first result of no TV was that I went to bed earlier than usual!

The next night or so, I got my reading nook all set up (translation: a lamp. Light can be very helpful.)

Then I opened a an old book I got at a thrift store. A big-name novel from several decades ago just out of curiosity. No doubt my mother read this one when it was in its heyday.

It turns out....

Reading is much nicer than having the TV on. Before long I was engrossed in my book.

Reading is peaceful and more rewarding. There is a sense of accomplishment from reading that you don't get from TV.

So try it out! Make a No-TV day, week, or month for yourself.

Even if others are watching, you don't have to. And if something is special on tv, you can always record it - or watch it on the internet.

TV used to be free.

Books are still free to borrow in the public library.

(As for TV costs, a LOT of far cheaper options are popping up; expensive cable is soon to go the way of 8-track tapes. A while ago I cancelled cable completely because it's such a rip-off.)

Decluttering your time in front of the TV is a great way to declutter your mind and your time.

It's inspiring and fun. Give it a whirl!

Get out your favorite books. Call your cousins to say hello. Take a class. Learn a language. Volunteer.

Switch out the TV time for something better - like a walk in your neighborhood.

You will find greater peace of mind and fulfillment.

Decluttering is about quality of life - inside our minds as well as our surroundings.

Here's to the joy of order in your life!
