Introducing the New Sony Cinema Line FX5

Just this week, Sony has released the exciting FX5, which brings high-end production capabilities to a compact, handheld form factor, bridging the gap between portable cinema bodies like the FX3 and flagship VENICE systems. Built around a newly developed 16.6MP full-frame stacked Exmor RS sensor and the BIONZ XR2 processor with AI tracking, it introduces 5K 3:2 Open Gate recording and internal 16-bit X-OCN RAW capture directly to dual memory slots. Shooters benefit from a versatile Triple Base ISO design (ISO 800, 4000, and 12800) offering over 15 stops of dynamic range, along with upgraded 5-axis in-body image stabilisation, anamorphic de-squeeze, and a larger 3.5-inch multi-angle touchscreen.

This week, as we continue our monthly pet theme, we are diving into the heart of their world: capturing "a day in the life" through candid shots. Forget posed portraits; it is all about documenting those genuine, unscripted moments that truly showcase their unique personality and daily routines. Get ready to immortalise the quirky, quiet, and playful sides of your furry, feathered, or scaled companions.

Get Down to Their Level:

For a truly immersive and intimate perspective, always try to lower yourself to your pet's eye level, whether they are on the floor, a couch, or even outside. This angle creates a much more engaging and relatable image than shooting downwards, giving a glimpse into their world.

Freeze the Action:

Pets, especially when playing, can be incredibly fast, so a quick shutter speed is essential to avoid blur and capture sharp detail. Aim for 1/500th of a second or faster, particularly for active pets, to cleanly freeze any exciting movements and expressions.

Focus on the Eyes:
Just like with humans, the eyes are often the most expressive part of an animal, and creating a sharp focus on them immediately draws the viewer in and creates an emotional connection. If your camera has eye-detection autofocus, now is the perfect time to activate it.

Utilise Natural Light:
Soft, diffused natural light is almost always the most flattering for pet photography, highlighting their textures and colours beautifully. Position your pet near a window or outdoors in open shade to avoid harsh shadows and uncomfortable flash, which can also startle them.

Capturing candid pet moments for "A Day in the Life" is incredibly rewarding! To truly freeze those adorable antics, consider a fast prime lens for fantastic low-light performance and beautiful bokeh. An external flash or portable LED light can illuminate their furry faces wonderfully, while a reflector adds natural fill to shadows. Essential accessories include high-capacity memory cards and spare batteries; pets are full of unpredictable surprises! A comfortable camera strap ensures you’re always ready for that perfect, spontaneous shot.

"To me, photography is an art of observation. It's about finding something interesting in an ordinary place... I've found it has little to do with the things you see and everything to do with the way you see them." — Elliott Erwitt

Your photo question of the week:

You are trying to capture your active pet mid-action in an outdoor setting, aiming to freeze their movement whilst achieving a pleasingly blurred background to make them stand out. Which camera settings combination would typically be most effective for this scenario?

A) Shutter Speed: 1/60 second, Aperture: f/8, ISO: 400

B) Shutter Speed: 1/1000 second, Aperture: f/2.8, ISO: 100

C) Shutter Speed: 1/250 second, Aperture: f/11, ISO: 800

D) Shutter Speed: 1/500 second, Aperture: f/5.6, ISO: 1600

Last weeks question:

When shooting a portrait of a pet that keeps shifting its weight and micro-moving on the couch, which autofocus mode will best ensure the eyes remain tack-sharp?

Thanks for all your answers to last week's photography question! The correct answer was B) AF-C / Servo (Continuous AF). This intelligent setting continuously adjusts your camera's focus to keep moving subjects sharp, ensuring you capture them perfectly every time.

Let's face it. Not all of us are professionals, and even still, pros still need to learn a thing or two about photography or cinematography. That's why we've put together this section. We want to highlight some of the common and not-so-common questions people face when attempting a particular genre.

I'm finding it tough to capture truly candid shots of my pet's daily life for "A day in the life". They always seem to know when I'm taking their photo and stop what they're doing. How can I get more natural moments without them posing?

Patience is key! Try observing your pet's routine and anticipating their movements. Use a longer lens (e.g., 70-200mm) to give them space and shoot from a distance, making you less obtrusive. Set your camera to a fast shutter speed (e.g., 1/500s) and continuous autofocus to capture fleeting moments sharply. Get down to their eye level for a more engaging perspective. Focus on natural light for authentic ambience.
