Let's explore how to make their gaze truly shine in your photographs. |

Focus on the eyes:
Just like human portraits, the eyes are the windows to the soul for our furry friends. Ensure your camera's focus point is precisely on the closest eye to capture their gaze and draw the viewer into the image. Many modern cameras feature Eye AF and Animal Eye AF features for this very purpose.

Get down to their level:
Most pet photos are taken from above, which can make your pet seem small or distant, and even make them feel uneasy, which is evident in your images. Try kneeling or even lying down to shoot at eye-level, creating a more intimate and engaging portrait that connects with their world.

Look for the catchlight:
A small sparkle of light reflected in your pet's eyes adds life and vibrancy to their portrait. Position yourself so a soft light source, like a window or open shade outdoors, creates this beautiful glint without harsh shadows.

Capturing the soulful eyes and unique personality of your beloved pet is incredibly rewarding. To truly nail those expressive pet portraits, consider upgrading your gear. As mentioned earlier, modern mirrorless cameras often feature dedicated AF tracking modes for this exact purpose. A fast prime lens is excellent for sharp focus and beautiful bokeh, whilst an external flash or a reflector can add those sparkling catchlights. Don't forget a sturdy tripod for stability or a remote shutter release for candid moments. Even a compact portable background can elevate your pet’s image, helping you organise the perfect shot every time - this last one probably won’t help you if your pet has the zoomies though!

The correct answer was C) A fast shutter speed (e.g., 1/1000s or faster), a wide aperture (e.g., f/2.8 or f/4), an appropriate ISO for the lighting conditions, and Continuous Autofocus (AF-C/AI Servo AF). These settings work together to freeze fast action while keeping your moving subject sharply in focus.

We want to highlight some of the common and not-so-common questions people face when attempting a particular genre. |

I have a black cat and a black Lab, and my camera completely struggles with them. The fur always turns into a featureless black blob, or the background gets completely blown out. How do I expose correctly for dark pets? |
|
|
Cameras are inherently calibrated to look at the world and average the exposure out to a neutral 18% gray. When a large, dark-furred animal fills the frame, your camera thinks the scene is too dark and overexposes the image, blowing out the background while turning the fur a muddy gray.
To fix this, you need to take creative control using Exposure Compensation (EV). When shooting a dark pet, dial your exposure compensation down by -0.7 to -1.5 stops. This forces the camera to keep the blacks rich while preserving details in the highlights. Additionally, avoid harsh, direct sunlight, which destroys dynamic range. Shoot in open shade or on overcast days - this softer light will actually catch the subtle textures and sheen of their coat without clipping your shadows.
