GOL Airlines Launches First Nonstop Service Between Rio and NY
|
|
Rio is always on my mind. Brazil is one of those bucket list destinations for many, for its hospitality, rich and colorful culture, and, of course, some of the most iconic beaches on our tiny blue dot. Brazil's leading airline is launching its first long-haul international service from Rio de Janeiro to New York City, connecting US travelers to the marvelous city.
GOL kicked off nonstop service between Rio de Janeiro (GIG) and New York (JFK) on July 8. Flights depart from Rio on Sundays, Wednesdays, and Fridays at 9:55 pm, landing early in New York at 6:55 am the following day, early enough for you to get an entire day in the city or catch up on sleep at your hotel before hitting the concrete jungle. Returning, flights leave New York on Mondays, Thursdays, and Saturdays at 11:00 pm, landing in Rio at 9:55 am the following morning. Hard to argue with overnight flights that give you a full day on either end.

The flight itself! GOL's Business INSIGNIA cabin comes with full lie-flat seats, premium amenity kits, and a 16-inch entertainment screen. The menu onboard was curated by Michelin-starred Brazilian chef Felipe Bronze, so your first meal gives you a bite of Rio before wheels touch down. This article breaks down the actual booking windows by region, and the numbers aren't what most people assume.
Checking one airport and one date is how so many people leave money on the table without ever knowing it. Say you're flying to Denver for a weekend trip and only search the DEN airport code. You might miss a fare out of Colorado Springs that's $90 cheaper even after the extra drive. It’s smart to know exactly how much a nearby airport or a one-day shift can save. It's more than people expect.

European Beach Rules Catching Travelers Off Guard This Summer

Some of Europe's most beautiful beaches have had enough of your Spotify playlist and other holiday habits you might not think twice about.
As pressure from overtourism and damage to coastal environments continues to compound on hotspots, many beaches in Europe are laying down the law with rules that go further than you'd expect. To avoid having your things confiscated or paying a fine, here are some rules you might not know before you grab your beach towel.
The rules (not suggestions):
🚭 Smoking and vaping are banned on 600+ Spanish beaches, plus nationwide in France ($154 fine) and in several Italian regions.
🏖️ No umbrellas or tents on some Sardinian beaches, like Punta Molentis, unless you follow the placement rules. On Pelosa Beach, you need a mat under your towel or risk a $114 fine. Yikes.
👙 Walking around town in just your swimsuit can cost you. In Sorrento, Italy, it's up to $570. In Albufeira, Portugal, fines run $342 to $1,710. In Croatia's coastal towns, it's up to $171. In Nice, France, it's $40 on the spot, or $43 if you're topless where it's banned.
🚫💦 Peeing in the sea will actually get you fined. I’m not sure how they can always tell, but yeah, good to note. In Spain, the city of Vigo has fines of $855, and in Marbella, peeing in the sea was banned at 25 beaches back in 2024.
🔊 Blasting music on the beach in Portugal can cost you $228 to $4,560 if you’re beachin’ it solo, or up to $41,040 if you're in a group. They can also just take your speaker if they feel like it.
🏰 So many of us, kids especially, love this innocent beach activity, but building an oversized sandcastle can get you fined in parts of Sardinia and Spain, up to $285, if it blocks emergency beach access or cleaning crews.
Those are just a few of the rules to be warned about, especially since half of them describe exactly what you might have done on your last trip.
