Good luck to any of you traveling this busy Memorial Day weekend. It turns out that there hasn’t been that big of a jump in people flying this year compared to last year.
However, if you’re planning on hitting the open road, so are a lot more people. My tips? Hit the road early and download GasBuddy so you can see where the cheapest gas stations are along your route. Stay safe out there.

Summer destinations to have on your radar
|
|
Summer is quickly approaching and, to be honest, this is when I get really bored as someone who reads travel news every single day. It’s the season where there is an onslaught of articles all recommending the same few destinations. Italy for a summer trip? Groundbreaking. That’s why I wanted to highlight a few lesser-known destinations that might be worth a visit this summer. Here are a few destinations to visit off the beaten path.
🛶 Voyageurs National Park, Minnesota
Voyageurs National Park proves you don’t have to go far to feel worlds away. This national park is best explored via water. Situated right near the Canadian border, you’ll experience vast waterways, rocky islands, and towering boreal forests. Instead of making your way on foot, you’ll have to travel via kayak, houseboat, or motorboat.
🏖️ Neum, Bosnia and Herzegovina
Croatia famously has a brilliant coast, narrowly blocking Bosnia from any access to the Adriatic Sea. However, there is a stretch of about seven miles that belongs to Bosnia called Neum. You can experience the same glistening coastal waters that Croatia has to offer for a lot cheaper. And then, after you check out Neum, head over to Mostar to round out your summer travels. Enjoy the natural beauty, delicious, cheap eats, and a bustling nightlife.
🤿 Kralendijk, Bonaire
If you’re looking for a quiet, island escape, Bonaire is your best bet. The Dutch island is located off the coast of Venezuela and is best known for its otherworldly snorkeling. (Even the name of its capital originates from the Dutch word for coral reef!)
Outside of an endless array of water sports, you can also visit a flamingo sanctuary while you’re there, and the bright pink salt pans you've likely seen pictures of before. Plus, it’s one of the few islands that doesn’t have a rainy season during the summer months.
🍷 Valle de Guadalupe, México
Known as the “Napa of México,” Valle de Guadalupe is where you go for good wine, a laid-back and earthy vibe, and desert skies. I can’t tell you how many times this region has been recommended to me. I’m not big on wineries, but every time a friend tells me about it, I feel like I would enjoy it more than other stuffier wine regions. The best part? It’s very close to the San Diego/Tijuana border, so it’s a quick trip with a big payoff. I’ll cheers to that!

📍 The Strait of Hormuz
The Strait of Hormuz has obviously been in the news for other reasons as of late, but it’s interesting to see what it looks like from a boat. Reader Ellen sent in this picture from a trip they took to Oman just last year. We typically only see pictures of its busy shipping lanes, so it’s nice to see a view that shows off its unexpected beauty. Thanks, Ellen!
