Where the Story Begins. The Dollar Tree story started in Norfolk, Virginia in 1953 with the founding of K&K 5&10, a store centered around value and convenience. After several evolutions, the business became Only $1.00, the store that became Dollar Tree, in 1986. Image of Only $1.00 store in a mall, next to K&K Toys.
From those early storefronts to thousands of stores across North America today, the brand has continued growing while remaining focused on the same core mission: helping customers find incredible value every day. Explore Our History button. Image of a late 1980s Dollar Tree store interior.
