Shell shocker: Should you really avoid eating eggs?

Eggs are widely used as a symbol of fertility, new life, and unlimited potential. But while they may make eggs-cellent decorations or literary allusions, they are definitely something you should avoid in your diet. That’s because studies suggest that eating as little as one egg per day significantly raises your risk of type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease and cancer. 

First, a little background: In the 1970s, there was a focus on reducing dietary cholesterol. Eggs were initially considered an unfavorable food because of their high concentration of cholesterol. However, the thinking on eggs changed when it became known that dietary saturated fat had a larger impact on fasting cholesterol. 

Anyone over a certain age will remember the American Egg Board’s series of commercials with the tagline: The Incredible, Edible Egg. But... They’re really not incredible. In fact, eggs are definitely hazardous to your health.

TOPICS COVERED: 

POSITIVES: Eggs contain several vitamins, are low in saturated fat and high in choline, which is essential for brain health. But in high levels, choline  is dangerous, as you’ll learn in the blog post.

NEGATIVES: Eggs are high in animal protein, contain no fiber and may expose us to pollutants. Eating one or more per day is linked to a higher risk of death. Eating two eggs per week dramatically raises risk of type 2 diabetes. Choline and cholesterol also have cancer-promoting properties. Consumption of five or more eggs per week is associated with breast, colon, and fatal prostate cancer.

WHAT TO EAT INSTEAD: 

Eggs are commonly eaten for breakfast in the U.S. But while they may not be as bad for you as sugary cereals or commercially baked goods, they are still a bad choice.

A Better Breakfast: Eat nuts, seeds, vegetables, fresh fruits and intact whole grains instead. There are few things as delicious (and as good for you) as a breakfast bowl with ground flax and chia seeds or avocado toast with onion and sprouts on Ezekiel bread.
