Stories we publish here at Dwell come to us in all sorts of ways, but there’s few more satisfying than when a writer we haven’t worked with cold-emails us with a great idea. In the case of our May/June issue, that would be Zoey Goto’s piece about sculptor Mark Cline, who is responsible for many of the giant fiberglass sculptures you may have seen on any cross-country American road trip.

Cline’s Enchanted Castle Studios in rural Virginia is no stranger to press, but Goto was particularly interested in meeting with him now, as he considers his legacy, and who will take it over once the back-breaking business of giant-making becomes too strenuous for him. And given that this year marks the 100th anniversary of Route 66, where so many of his revitalized or fresh pieces stand, when better a time to take a look at this particular slice of Americana? 

Goto—who, since she reported this story, has written for Dwell about a couple who love Love Motels so much they’ve built one of their own—and photographer Scott Suchman brought these giants to life for me, and may prompt you to try to visit one yourself—or even sign up for one of Cline’s classes and make one of your own.
