The other day I was scrolling online and saw a post that stopped me in my tracks.
Doritos just released protein chips.
I had to read it twice. Really?
Protein latte foam.
Protein cereal.
Protein candy.
Protein cookies.
Everything is getting "protein-ified", and I think we've kind of lost the plot.
To be clear: I'm a registered dietitian. I love protein. You absolutely should be eating enough of it.
But just because something has protein doesn't make it a health food. You shouldn't be eating more Doritos to hit your protein goals.
Christopher Gardner, a professor of medicine at Stanford, put it cleanly:
"The American diet is not lacking in protein." What we're actually short on is calcium, potassium, fiber, and vitamin D."
When Yoel was developing the ROYO recipes, we never sat down and asked "how do we pack more protein into this?"
Our goal was simpler. Take foods we already loved and make lower-carb, lower-calorie versions of them. The protein and fiber came naturally from the ingredients that we used like Flaxseed. Oat fiber. Psyllium husk.
So yes, absolutely get your protein. Just try to get it from whole foods and real ingredients first.
And when you see "high protein" on a label, don't let it sneak past you.
