Sometimes, the only way to truly know how a piece of gear will perform is to head out and use it, over and over again. Kerry, from our Online Team, has taken her pair of Salomon X Ultras across Lake District bogs and Swedish boulder fields. Two iterations later, the X Ultra series is still going strong, and we can see why.

X Ultra series: a staff favourite

I’ve been putting my Salomon X Ultra 3s through the wringer for years now, and they are still going strong. I’ve always preferred a lighter walking boot, and I’ve found the X Ultras to be comfortable but supportive, even on long-distance hikes where you might typically wear something sturdier.

I initially brought them to trek across Sarek in Northern Sweden, and they offered great support even with a 25kg pack and navigating boulder fields and river crossings. The GORE-TEX membrane also held up well against the Swedish weather.

While the uppers are finally starting to show signs of wear (largely from multiple days on the trot trudging through peat bogs in Scotland without being cleaned), the soles are still remarkably intact and have at least another summer’s use in them. When the time comes to replace them, the X Ultra 5 is the obvious choice for me.

The X Ultra 3s have become my go-to boots for rest days lower down the valleys in the Alps and have been perfect for via ferrata.

The sole has held up well for its age and the miles it's done.
