5 Unexpected Summer Safety Tips

Summer weather still has more than a month left in most of the country, and there are a few dangers of summer that you might not have thought of.  Here are a few tips that we don't want to overlook.

1. Pool: Don't let your dog drink from the pool.  Excessive pool chemicals can cause stomach upset.  Also make sure that there are dog-accessible steps and that your dog knows where they are in case they fall in to the pool.  Or better yet, keep your dog away from the pool unless supervised.
2. Grilling: Having your friends or family in the backyard for a backyard party, but the hot grills, salty treats, and other food unsuitable for pets.  You will need to keep a close eye on your dog and pet-proof your party.
3. Hot Toes: Remember that pavement soaks up heat!  As it gets hotter, you may want to walk your dog on dirt instead of pavement, in the shade, or in the morning.  You can also use dog booties!
4. Snakes: Snakes come out in the heat too, so be aware when you are in snake territory.  You can even take special snake avoidance training classes for your dog, and be sure to learn snake bite first aid.
5. Dehydration: The best way to cure dehydration is to prevent it in the first place.  Keep access to water for your dog at all times and encourage drink breaks when you are walking.  Avoid being out in the heat of the day.
