If you or someone in your house is moving into campus housing this month, the animal question is worth handling now rather than during move-in week. College housing is generally treated as housing — which means an emotional support animal is usually handled as a reasonable accommodation request, not as a pet-policy exception. Schools set their own process, and every request is decided individually, so the earlier you start, the better. Five things that make it go smoothly:
- Find the right office. On most campuses this runs through disability services or accessibility services, not the housing office. Housing usually implements the decision after that office has made it.
- Ask for their process in writing. Schools have their own forms, deadlines, and documentation standards. Getting that list up front saves the back-and-forth that eats up August.
- Start before the deadline, not before move-in. Many schools want requests well ahead of the semester. A request filed the week of move-in may simply not be decided in time.
- Have your documentation current. If your paperwork is a few years old or was written for a previous address or a different animal, get it refreshed before you submit.
- Plan for the roommate conversation. Approval is between you and the school, but living well with an animal in a small shared room is between you and whoever is in it. Talk about allergies, schedules, and quiet hours early.
A little paperwork in August is a much better trade than a scramble in September. If your letter needs updating before you file, you can start that anytime.
