This week is International Assistance Dog Week — a week set aside to recognize the animals who make daily life easier for the people they belong to. Your emotional support animal doesn’t need a formal task to earn its keep — the comfort they provide at home is real, and it counts. Here are five simple ways to mark the week.
- Take the picture. Most of us have hundreds of photos of our animals and almost none with them. Ask someone to take one of the two of you this week.
- Do their favorite thing, not yours. A longer sniff-walk, the good treats, the squeaky toy you have been quietly hiding — let them pick the agenda for an afternoon.
- Check the fit. Collars stretch and animals change shape. You should be able to slide two fingers under the collar comfortably — no more, no less.
- Refresh the boring stuff. Confirm the microchip registry still has your current phone number, and make sure the tag on their collar is still readable.
- Tell someone the story. A neighbor, a group chat, a comment on our Facebook page — the easiest way to build understanding for assistance animals is one honest story at a time.
However you spend it, thank you for the care you give your animal. It is the whole reason we do this.
